PROGRAMME ON INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM (I.A.R.F) ORGANISED BY NSS – 06.02.14

International Association for Religious Freedom (I.A.R.F), India Chapter and the NSS unit of the Sadakathullah Appa College jointly organised an Inter Faith Dialogue on 06.02.2014 at the college Seminar Hall. The Principal Dr. M. Mohamed Sathik presided the function. Advocate B.T. Chidambaram, National Secretary welcomed the gathering. Dr. P. Arul Prakasam,National Treasurer (IARF) gave a brief history of I.A.R.F . Dr. Thomas Mathew, chairman (SACC) of I.A.R.F was the chief guest. Rev. Fr. Antony Cruz, Parish Priest, Tirunelveli, spoke about Christanity. Dr. A.Asaraf Ali, Associate Professor of History Sadakathullah Appa College spoke on Islam. Dr. S.Mahadevan , Head , Dept of Tamil, Sadakathullah Appa College spoke about Hinduism. N. Krishna Moorthy spoke about other religion in general. Mr. P.R. Subramania Raja , Mr. M.K.M Kabeer Vice chairman I.A.R.F , Mr. Maria Soosai delivered the felicitation Address . GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS CM’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION BLOOD DONATION CAMP - 14.02.14

The massive blood donation camps organised by the State Transport Department on February 14 in key cities across Tamil Nadu to mark the 66th birthday of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa is likely to enter the Guinness Book of World Records since the number of donors has crossed 50,000. Till now, the largest blood donation drive was organised by Saint Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insan (India) at Dera Sacha Sauda, Haryana, India, on August 8, 2010 when 43,732 people donated blood. The blood donation camps were held in 10 places - Chennai, Vellore, Coimbatore, Tiruchy, Madurai, Villupuram, Karur, Salem, Kumbakonam and Tirunelveli. In Tirunelveli, Minister Sendur Pandian, Vijila Sathyanath and others came forward to donate blood at the venue organised at Sadakathullah Appa College Campus. The campus was filled with 450 beds and 42 blood banks, with both government and private hospitals engaged. The general public also came forward to donate blood. NSS Programme officer Mr. M. ONE –DAY SPECIAL MEDICAL CAMP – 14.02. 14

One –Day Special Medical Camp was organised by Kayalpattinam M.K.T. Abubaker Memorial Endowment on 14.02.2014 at Sadakathullah Appa College. The Principal Dr. M. Mohamed Sathik, presided the function. Dr. Mohammed Thambi, Paediatrician with his team of 25 doctors gave medical consultation to the students and staff members of the college. Dr. Abu, Paediatrician, General Physician Dr. Ramesh, Chief Surgeon Dr. Janakiram, Dermatologist Dr. Mahakrishnan, Gynaecologists Dr. Sornalatha, Dr. Fazia, Dentist Dr. PremKumar ,Dr. Nazar attended the camp and gave free medical council and medicines to more than 500 students of Sadakayhullah Appa College. LAUNCH OF RAJIV GANDHI KHEL ABHIYAN AND NATIONAL YOUTH POLICY RALLY – 27.02.14

Students from various colleges took out a rally here on Thursday to create awareness among the public of the recently-launched National Youth Policy – 2014’ and ‘Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan.’Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan’ is a new scheme being introduced by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for creating sports infrastructure in villages and encourage outstanding sportsmen from the rural areas. After Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Tirunelveli City, T.P. Suresh Kumar flagged off the rally at Sadakkathullah Appa College, the procession culminated at St. John’s College. Over 350 students from Sadakkathullah Appa College, St. John’s College, St. Xavier’s College and Sarah Tucker College participated in the rally. NSS Programme officer Mr. M. A REPORT ON 7 DAY SPECIAL CAMP FOR GIRLS

The NSS Girls’ Unit 14, 151 and 152 of Sadakathullah Appa College, Tirunelveli organised a 7 Day Special Camp for Girls at the respective villages of Sandaipettai, Sevalaperi and Pottal Nagar from 02.03 2014 to 08.03 2014. The theme of the camp was “The Role of Women in Building the Nation”. The camp residence was at Chandaipettai, our adopted village. The first day programme of the 7 Day Special Camp was the Inauguration function on 02. 03. 2014. The function started at 7.00 pm. Our college Principal Dr. M. Mohamed Sathik , presided the function and the other village members present were Mr. N.S.Muthu Mohamed, Retd. Thasildar, Mr. A. Pakeer Maideen, Secretary, Sandaipettai Jamad, Mr. A. Syed Mohammed, Persident , Chandaipettai Jamad. Mr. N.S.Muthu Mohamed, Retd. Thasildar, delivered the keynote address Dr. P. Navaraj Chandrasekaran, Director of the Self Financing Courses delivered the Inaugural address and Dr. M.Narayanan, Controller of Examinations gave the Felicitation address. In his speech he insisted how effective a camp should be and stated the fact that the adopted village Chandaipettai, the camp site was the apt place chosen for the7 Day Special Camp for Girls which is known for its hospitality and safety. He also said that the students should get involved with the activities of the camp and should practice to live simple life like the inmates of the Chandaipettai village and also added that it is their utmost duty to serve them.

He focused on the “Importance of Taking Right Decision at Right Time” by quoting an anecdote how a small child was intelligent enough to take right decision. He insisted that every student should inculcate this quality which will pave way for their success. Dr.Kanna Muthiah, NSS programme officer ( Unit 152) welcomed the gathering, Mrs. S.Firthous Fathima, NSS programme officer ( Unit 14 ) compered the programme and the day ended with the vote of thanks proposed by the NSS programme officer ( Unit 151 ) Mrs. M.P.Syed Ali Nishaya. The meeting ended up at 10.00pm.

On the second day 03.03.2014, Mr. A. Pakeer Maideen Presided the meeting. Mr. A. Balakrishnan, Vice President, Consumer Protection Awareness, Rahmath Nagar, Palayamkottai, planted 25 neem saplings at the camp site at 10.30 am and delivered a speech on “Consumer Protection Awareness and the Importance of planting trees”. This speech not only motivated the students but also motivated the village people who happily agreed to take care and maintain the trees planted there by watering them regularly. Evening programme began at 6.30 pm. Mr. A. Shahul Hameed, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Computer Science, Presided the meeting and Dr. M. Kamaludeen , Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry delivered a speech on “The Importance of Indian Medicine and its uses”. He explained the side effects of harmful drugs and medicines and the goodness of Indian Medicine and its role in curing deadly diseases. The speech gave an overall perception of the values of home medicine and the village people as well as our students were able to get clear idea about the benefits of Indian Medicine. The meeting ended up at 10.00pm.

The third day 04.03.2014 activities began at 10.00am. Mr. S. Muthukrishnan, former President, Sivaleraperi, flagged off the “Health Awareness Rally”. The students began the rally from Chandaipettai shouting slogans on Health Awareness and carrying more than 50 placards on various health issues like Aids, Alcoholism, Early Marriage, Pollution, Environment, Harm of plastic bags , health and hygiene and the rally went through Sivalaperi and Pottalnagar and came back to the camp site. Mr. S. Muthukrishnan , former President , Sivaleraperi, gave refreshments to the students who took the rally and quenched their thirst to beat the heat of the sun. The rally ended up at Chandaipettai at 1.00pm. The evening programmes started at 6.30 pm. Cultural and sports events were conducted for Chandaipettai residential children to showcase their hidden talents. About 45 children participated in various events like Running Race, Musical Chair, Frog Race, Fashion show, Storytelling, Rhymes and Kabadi. Prizes were distributed to all the winners and all the participants to encourage and motivate them for their future endeavour. At 8.00 p.m Dr A. Hamil, Associate Professor, Department of Commerce, delivered a speech on “Opportunities for women in Small Scale Industries”. The speech created awareness to the students and the village people especially women on various opportunities thrown open to them in Small Scale Industries, bank loan procedures and guidelines related to Small Scale Industries. The meeting ended up at 10.00pm.

On the fourth day 05.03.2014 One Day Eye camp was organised for Chandaipettai Village people. Chief Doctor, Dr. D. Lionol Raj from Agarwal Eye Hospital, Tirunelveli with the camp organiser Mr. P. Velu and his team visited Chandaipettai. 40 people came for eye consultation and had eye check up. They were distributed discount coupons for their next eye check up visit. Mr. P. Velu, camp organiser, gave a speech on the diseases affecting retina, rectifying vision defects and also focused on the importance and procedures of Eye Donation. The evening programme began at 6.30pm. Mr. M.P. Kader Ovilliah, Manager, Self Financing Courses, delivered the presidential address. In his speech he made a brief survey of colleges from 1878 to 1971, among which 12 were women’s college and focused on the “Importance of Women Education”. Dr. N. Mohammed Hussain, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of History, delivered the felicitation address in his speech , he highlighted the “Importance of Time Management, Leadership Qualities and Decision Making ” and stressed the fact that women should inculcate these qualities to become successful and appreciated the NSS Programme officers Dr.Kanna Muthiah, Mrs .S. Firthous Fathima and Mrs .M.P. Syed Ali Nishaya for their perfect logistic , planning and arrangements made at the camp site. He wished the 7 Day Special Camp for Girls all success in its future endeavours. He also stated that the smiles on the faces of the students on the fourth day reflected their happiness, comfort of the stay from lab to land. He added that this sort of village camps will inculcate social values and responsibilities and service nature in the minds of the students. He said, “Working towards success, it makes a Master. Working towards Satisfaction, it makes a Legend” with these words he once again thanked the NSS Programme officers for organising the 7 Day Special Camp for Girls in well planned manner. Dr. S. Mahadevan, Professor and Head of the Department of Tamil then delivered a speech on “Women Empowerment”. He stated that the village Chandaipettai was known for its historic significance. Chandaipettai is one of the villages where Thamaraparani Civilization started on banks of this village. Its History dates from 2000 years ago that in Tamil Literature, a significant work entitled, Mukkudal Pallu was based on this village Chandaipettai. Sri Vallaba Peir Yerri a Pandya King ruled the place which is now called as Sevalaperi. He also added that Poet Subramania Bharathiyar’s native place was Chandaipettai and even today the remains of his house stands as an evidence though he had spend much of his days in Ettayapuram. He wished to record that the village is known for religious tolerance and secularism as a Temple, Mosque and Church are located around the village at walk able distance. The student volunteers of the camp proved to be secular as they came from different religious background. He also added in a country like India, were woman is glorified as land and sea still struggle to stand independent. Women suffer from violence and harassments, only this kind of camps can create social awareness in the minds of students and they can understand the social responsibilities and their commitments to the society. He appreciated the students for spending 7 days outside the college campus and their home for a social cause. He was happy to record that the camp has initiated and motivated the students to speak on stage, conduct a show, and perform short play, skit and mime to convey their awareness message on various topics paved way for their overall “Personality Development”. He further said this kind of camp teaches the students to respect each other and they also learn to share, take care and adjust themselves with peer group and the society. The meeting ended up at 10.00pm

The fifth day 06.03.2014 programme started at 10.00am. Mrs A. Kasi Lakshmi, VHN (Village Health Nurse) Sivalaperi Primary Health Centre, gave a speech on the “Awareness on the Importance of Immunisation and Vaccines”. She gave details on Government Schemes for Pregnant women and their regular vaccines during pregnancy and immunisation schedule for babies in PHCs. At 11.30 am. Ms. Chinnathai, Sadakathullah Appa College student from Department of History gave a demonstration on Fabric Painting, Stone work and Fur doll making. The evening programme began at 7.00pm. Dr. M. Sithi Jameela, Professor and Head of the Department of Zoology delivered an awareness speech on “Environmental Pollution”. She explained the harmful effects of Plastics and polythene bags and how it affects the surroundings and environment. She also highlighted on various deadly diseases caused by water pollution and by consuming adulterated food. She insisted that students should be aware of the ill effects of Environmental Pollution and join hands together to create a pollution free atmosphere. For creating social awareness, the students performed skit and mime on various themes and the programme ended up at 10.00 p.m.

On the sixth day, 07. 03.2014, Mr. R.John Duraisamy, Headmaster, Chandaipettai Middle School, presided the meeting at 10.00 a.m. The NSS team in the presence of the school Headmaster planted 5 Trees in the school campus. Sports events like Running Race, Balloon blasting, Bottle filling and Stone picking were conducted for the school students. 10 students participated and prizes were distributed to the winners and runners.

The Valediction function began at 7.00 p.m .Dr.Kanna Muthiah welcomed the gathering and presented a report on the achievements of the 7 day Special Camp for Girls on the theme “The Role of Women in Building the Nation”. Mr. N.S.Muthu Mohamed, Retd. Thasildar, delivered the felicitation address. Dr. A. Asaraf Ali, Associate Professor , Department of History delivered the felicitation address and stated that the camp was well planned and organised and appreciated the NSS Programme officers for their efficient and dynamic job. He further stated that the stay and experience in the village would inculcate the sense of social commitment, service in the minds of the students. Dr. A Nihamathullah, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of English, delivered the felicitation address. He appreciated the NSS programme officers for organising 7 Day Special Camp for Girls on the theme “The Role of Women in Building the Nation” in well planned manner. He spoke on “Facing Life with Proper Perspective”. The suicide of women, especially married women is on the increase. Unable to adjust with the changed environment, lack of confidence in overcoming the problems of life were highlighted. He also said by developing self confidence and courage one can save not only themselves but also their fellow citizens ultimately contributing to the growth and development of the entire nation .Mr. S. Kamaludeen , Office Assistant , conveyed his best wishes and stated that the camp was well organised. Feedback was collected from NSS students on the 7 Day Special Camp for Girls in Chandaipettai. The programme ended up with a visual treat of Silambam and Martial Arts performance of Mr. M.Syed Ali, Physical Director of Self Financing Courses and his team of 20 students. Mrs. M.P.Syed Ali Nishaya proposed a vote of thanks.

On the seventh day 08.03.2014, Mr. K.M. Peer Mohammed presided the function. Camp evaluation was done and the village people stated that they were happy with the field work done by the students. They felt that various awareness programmes conducted on 7 Day Special Camp for Girls at the respective villages of Chandaipettai, Sevalaperi and Pottal Nagar from 02.03 2014 to 08.03 2014 on theme “The Role of Women in Building the Nation” were really useful and stated that the students of Sadakathullah Appa College would have gained experience to practise national integration and social harmony. The camp would enhance to develop among them a sense of social and civic responsibility thereby promoting national integration and social harmony.
