INAUGURAL FUNCTION ON 31.07.2023

The department of Nutrition and Dietetics organized its Inaugural Function of 2023 on 31.07.2023. Mrs. M. L. Noor Jameela, M.Sc., (Nutrition and Dietetics) the alumni of Sadakathullah Appa college, Tirunelveli delivered her Keynote address on “PATENT FILLING”. Dr. S. M. Abdul Kader, Principal, Sadakathullah Appa College gave the presidential address. Dr. S. M. A. Syed Mohamed Khaja, Vice Principal, Sadakathullah Appa College gave his Inaugural address. Mr. S. M. Prasad, Head and Assistant Professor, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics proposed his welcome speech. Around 140 students were participated in this event.

Community Awareness programme on 10.08.2023 In View of celebrating Breast-Feeding Week

The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics along with the SOP (Sadakath Outreach Programme) of the Sadakathullah Appa college, Tirunelveli organized an awarness programme about the importance of breast feeding to the postpartum mothers in the Anganwadi of Santhinagar block on 10.08.2023. The post graduate students of the Department of Nutrition and Dietiecs, educated the people through charts and they display the foods to be included after the period of postpartum. They also highlighted the importance of breast feeding to the community.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT – HOTEL APPLE TREE ON 17.08.2023

The III B.Sc Students of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, visited The Hotel Apple Tree on 17.08.2023. There they Visited the Food production area, and front office. Mr. Selva Kumar, Executive chef, Hotel Apple Tree, Tirunelveli, demonstrated about how to receive the guest, different types of napkin folding and various styles of services. Mrs. M. Vadivel Devi and Mrs. C. Aruna Sundari, Assistant Professors of the department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Sadakathullah Appa College, Tirunelveli gathered the students.

First Prize On Fireless Cooking Competition on 11.09.2023

The students of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, has participated in the Fire-less cooking competition organized by the ICDS at the Sarah Tucker College, Tirunelevli. Ms. N. Ummu Naseeha of III B.Sc Nutrition and Dietiecs got the First prize and she was awarded with a cash prize of Rs.2000. Mr. Roshan of III B.Sc Nutrition and Dietetics got the second prize and awarder with a cash prize of Rs100. Mr. S. M. Prasad., Head and Assistant professor and Mrs. M. Vadivel Devi, Ms. F. Fathima Farzana, Assistant professors of the Department of Nutrition and Dietiecs guided the students. More than 45 Students were participated in this event.

GUEST LECTURE ON 13.09.2023

The department of Nutrition and Dietetics organized a guest lecture on 13.09.2023. Mr. Selva Kumar, Executive chef, Hotel Apple Tree, Tirunelveli. He demonstrated different styles of table service, receiving guest and different types of table settings in Food service Management for III B.Sc Nutrition and Dietetics students. Mr. S. M. Prasad, Head Department of Nutrition and Dietetics delivered the Welcome address. Mrs. C. Aruna Sundari and Mrs. M. Vadivel Devi, Assistant Professor, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics organized and delivered the vote of thanks. Around 40 students were benefited with the demonstration of table settings.

POSTER MAKING COMPETITION IN VIEW OF CELEBRATING NUTRITION MONTH ON 27.09.2023

In view of the nutrition month, a poster making competition was held on 27.09.2023 in the department of Nutrition and Dietetics. Posters were instructed to be designed based on the theme "Healthy Diet Going Affordable for All"(ஆரோக்கியமான உணவு அனைவருக்கும் மலிவு விலையில்) . Nearly 10 students took part in the competition and displayed their posters. Mr. Marcus, Fitness consultant judged the posters based on the creativity, relevance to the theme and presentation skills. Attractive prizes was awarded to all the participants. The prize winners were awarded with cash prize.

FIRST PRIZE IN POSTER PRESENTATION

The Post Graduate Students of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, participated and presented a poster in the International seminar at Holly Cross Home Science college, Thoothukudi.

EXPERIMENTAL LEARNING ON 05.10.2023

Dr. Ed. Priyadharshini M.Com., SET., M.Phil., Ph.D., MBA(Edu.Mgnt)., ADE., HDCA., Assistant professor, Department of Commerce delivered her speech on “Book Keeping on Food Service Management”. The students of III B.Sc Nutrition were actively participated in the event.

WORLD HEART DAY CELEBRATION

GUEST LECTURE ON 04.10.2023

The department of Nutrition and Dietetics organized the Guest Lecture on 04.10.2023 in view on world heart day celebration. Dr. Benitta Mary, M.B.B.S., MD (General Medicine), DM (Cardiology) Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist, CSI Bell Pins Mission Hospital, Tirunelveli delivered a special address on “USE HEART, KNOW HEART”. Dr.S.M.Abdul Kader, Principal, Sadakathullah Appa College, gave the presidential address. Dr. S. M. A Syed Mohamed Khaja, Vice-Principal, Unaided Courses Felicitated the Programme. Mr. S. M. Prasad, Head and Assistant Professor, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics delivered the welcome address. Mrs. V. Angel Mary, Assistant Professor, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics proposed the Vote of thanks.

Training on “Importance of Soft Skills” on 19.01.2024

A Training programme was given to the Post graduate students of nutrition and dietetics on 19.01.2024 about the importance of soft skills. Mr. Marcus, Fitness consultant and psychiatrist was the resource person. He delivered his speech on time management, critical thinking, team-work and stress management. More than 40 students were in this training programme.

Training for the young scientists on 05.02.2024

YSSP activity for the Dept. of Nutrition and Dietetics was assigned on February 5, 2024 to train the young scientists. The day started with a session by Mr. S. M. Prasad, Assistant Professor and Head, Dept. of Nutrition and Dietetics. He elaborated on the opportunities of the department and the courses taught in this department. The next session was handled by Mrs. Jesus Rosalind, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Food science and Nutrition, Sarah Tucker College who was invited to deliver a session on Human Development. Further, the students were divided into three separate groups and the issues faced by them in the society, in school and in families are discussed. Activities such as Rorschach’s ink blot test was conducted to analyse the student’s personality based on their perception of inkblots. The next session was handled by Dr. S. Rama Jeba. She explained the various types of packaging materials and their importance in preserving and increasing the shelf life of food products. Following the session, Mrs. C. Aruna Sundari discussed the importance of balanced diet and Recommended Dietary Allowances for different age groups. Further Ms. F. Fathima Farzana listed the significance of BMI and their importance in recommending diet for others. The afternoon practical session was handled by Dr. J. Merrylin and Mrs. M. Vadivel Devi. Hands on training on baking cakes were provided and the science behind the addition of each and every ingredients was explained. Dr. A. S. Sumaya, Assistant Professor, Nutrition and Dietetics organised the students.

FOOD DISPLAY AT THE NELLAI BOOK FAIR

MILLET FOOD FESTIVAL CUM DISPLAY ON 11.02.2024

The students of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, sadakathullah Appa College, Tirunelveli participated in the Millet Food Festival organized by the Tamil Nadu Government, Department of Food Supply and Consumer Protection at the Porunai Nellie Book Festival – 2024. It was held on 11.02.2024 (Sunday). Students of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics participated in the event along with professors and received a book coupon worth Rs.1500/-. The students won third prize and got certificates. Dr. S.M. Abdul Kader, Prinicpal, Sadakathullah Appa College and Dr. S. M. A. Syed Mohammed Khaja, Vice-principal, Un-aided course presented the award for the students and appreciated the work done by the students. Mr. S.M. Prasad, Head and Assistant Professor, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics directed the students. Mrs. M. Vadivel Devi, Mrs. C. Aruna Sundari, Assistant Professors, department of Nutrition and Dietetics, guided the students and helps them to participate actively in this event.

Report on visit to KABIF, Killikulam on 26.02.24

The students of the department of Nutrition and Dietetics (75) and PG Zoology (10) visited KABIF, Killikulam on 26.02.2024 along with Dr. J. Merylin, Dr. S. Rama Jeba, Mrs. Vadivel Devi and Mrs. V. Anegl Mary, Assitant Professors of Nutrition and Dietetics. Mr. Arun, CEO of KABIF highlighted the activities of KABIF and motivated the students on innovation and startup ideas. He also outlined the steps involved to incubate an idea of a budding entrepreneur. The students visited the office cabin (space provided for budding entrepreneurs), conference hall (to conduct board meeting by the incubates), Solar drying unit (to dry various fruits and vegetables after filtering the UV rays), Millet processing unit (which includes dehuskers, pulverizers, millers), Palm processing unit (including jaggery making unit, filtration units and bottling units), Bakery units (Including ovens and mixers of different size) and Hydroponics unit (a technology adopted by Israel to cultivate plants without the presence of soil). Different valued added products developed by the entrepreneurs that were showcased were also shown to them.

INTERDEPARTMENTAL COMPETITION ON 27.02.2024

The department of Nutrition and Dietetics, sadakathullah Appa college along with ICDS organized an Interdepartmental competition for the students on 27.02.2024. Mrs. Jenifa, CDPO Officer, Palyamkottai block and Mrs. Sithiya Julie, Head and Assistant Professor, Department of Food Science and Nutrition, Sarah Tucker College, Tirunelveli were acted as a Resource person. The students of various departments were actively participated in the poster presentation competition titled about the “Anemia and its prevalence”. The students of the department of Nutrition and Dietetics and the students of the department of zoology and psychology got prizes in the competition.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT ON 05.03.2024

On March 5th two staff members along with II MSc nutrition and dietetic students (15) visited Jasmine coir product located in Solaiseri where they learned how to ferment the fibres of coconut and how they are in turn converted into Coco peat and fertilizers to grow trees. They also learnt how to reduce the electric conductivity of the cocopeat. Then they visited IVN rice mill where they learnt how to dehull and the dehusk the rice grains. They also learnt how the rice is boiled before selling in the market. Then the students visited Sri Ramana Agro food where they learnt how coconuts are desiccated and then cut into pieces to extract oil from them. The oil extracted was present with many impurities and thus they were filtered with four plate filters leading to extraction of pure coconut oil with less viscosity. They also learnt the importance of packaging to attract the customers. The students learnt that the quality should not be compromised while running a Food industry.

INDUSTRIAL VISIT ON 06.03.2024

The II B.Sc Nutrition and Dietetics students(27)along with two staff members visited an IVN rice mill on 06.03.2024 located in Solaiseri. There they learnt how the rice grains are dehull and dehusked. They also learnt how the rice is boiled before selling in the market. Then the students visited Sri Ramana Agro food where they learnt how coconuts are desiccated and then cut into pieces to extract oil from them. The oil extracted was present with many impurities and thus they were filtered with four plate filters leading to extraction of pure coconut oil with less viscosity. They also learnt the importance of packaging to attract the customers. The students learnt that the quality should not be compromised while running a Food industry.
