DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS (PG)

Activities - (2021-2022)

The Department of Physics, Sadakathullah Appa College, inaugurated the Physics Association on 26th of August 2022. The Chief Guest, Dr. S. Rajasekar delivered a special lecture to the students in the inaugural function. In his talk; he said that “Physics is in everything”. He also mentioned that we must be proud to be a part of the Physics community. His lecture was simple and the examples he gave from day-to-day life was easily understood by the participants. More than 170 participants including Research Scholars, Professors, UG and PG students of the department participated in the inauguration function.

The Department of Physics, Sadakathullah Appa College, organized a Guest Lecture on “Motion in Physics” on 28th of September2022.The Chief Guest, Prof. R. Velusamy, Professor and Head of the Department of Physics (Rtd), Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal college delivered a very interesting talk on Newtonian Mechanics, gradually took over to Classical Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics and Relativity. He also conducted an interactive session with the participants. More than 150 participants including Research Scholars, Professors, UG and PG students of Sadakathullah Appa College, participated in the function.

A One-Day Seminar on the theme, “Nuclear Energy for Sustainable Development of India and a Solution to Climatic Changes” with a Science Expo was organized by the Department of Physics on 29/08/2022 at 10.30 a.m in the College Seminar hall. The Chief Guest, Dr. B. Sundarakannan, Professor and Head Department of Physics, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in his Keynote Address gave a precise statistical data regarding the power generated and the cost of production by thermal power stations, hydrothermal power stations, wind mills, tidal energy and Nuclear power stations. The second Guest speaker Dr. B. Sundar Rajan, Scientific Officer ‘E’ delivered an interesting talk on how Nuclear Energy is a sustainable, clean and green energy. He also elaborated on the large scale power production done in Kudankulam power plant at a low cost which is very much needed to meet the power demand of our country to make it a developed nation. He also insisted upon the safety measures followed in Kudankulam power plant and how nuclear energy is consumed as a clean and green energy without any pollution or emission of greenhouse gases and so gives a solution to Climatic Changes. He also conducted an interactive session with the participants. More than 300 participants including the Research Scholars, Professors, UG and PG students of various colleges including school students participated in the Seminar. Awards were given for best paper presenters.

A Workshop on “Physics through Experiments for School Students”was organized by the Department of Physics on 01/02/2023 at 09.30 a.m in the College Auditorium. The Chief Guest, Mr.V.Thirupathy, Chief Educational Officer, Tirunelveli delivered the inaugural address. He, being a Physicist, motivated the students to learn Physics by understanding and experimenting as it is retained for life time, rather than reading or visualizing. The Resource Person Dr. A. Subbiah Pandi demonstrated various experiments in Physics through which he explained various laws and the concepts relating to Physics. He demonstrated Galileo’s Feather and coin experiment for the law of falling bodies, showing a candle and a crushed paper falling at the same rate. He also showed that a sheet of paper fell slower than the candle due to air resistance and larger surface area. By breaking a coconut, placed on top of a soda bottle placed on the head of a student volunteer with a copper rod, he explained the law of collision- conservation of momentum and kinetic energy. He conducted an interactive session with the participants. About 400 participants including high school students, higher secondary school students, teachers from various schools, UG and PG students of our College attended the workshop.

Department of Physics, Sadakathullah Appa College celebrated National Science day on 28th of February 2023. 28th February is celebrated as National Science day to commemorate the discovery of Raman Effect, which led Sir C. V. Raman winning the Nobel Prize. Inter-collegiate competitions such as Quiz, Model Making, Debate, Oral and Poster Presentation were organized by the Department of Physics in the College Auditorium. The Chief Guest, Dr.R.S.Kannu, Senior Scientist (Retd), ISRO, Mahendragiri, who delivered the inaugural address. He motivated the students to update their knowledge and encouraged them to join ISRO and other Indian organizations and to offer their contributions to our country. The Chief Guest, Dr.J. Daniel Chellappa, an Eminent Nuclear Scientist, BARC, Mumbai, who, in his Valedictory Address mentioned how Science, Engineering and Technology boost the economy of the country. He conducted an interactive session with the participants. He motivated the young minds to attain the sustainable development goals. About 400 students participated in the Inter-collegiate competitions and won prizes. Various colleges such as Sarah Tucker college, The M. D. T. Hindu College,St. Johns College,Sri Paramakalyani College, St. Xavier’s College, M.K.N. Arts and Science College participated in the events and St. Xavier’s College, Palayamkottai won the overall championship.
